

Pardes served as President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Chairman of the APA's Council on Research from 1990 -1994. Pardes also helped to improve the public image of psychiatry and to ensure a broad-based inclusion of the psychological, sociological, and biological aspects of psychiatry. While at NIMH, he strengthened the research program and emphasized the need to increase both reimbursement and research support for psychiatry. In 1978, he was recruited as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) where he remained until 1984. Pardes was instrumental in building research programs and working closely with the general psychiatric community and the state to develop closer collaboration between academia and other psychiatric and mental health groups. In 1975, he moved to Colorado as Chairman of the University of Colorado Medical Center. Subsequent to his training, he was Associate Director of the Residency Training Program at Downstate Medical Center and went on to become University Hospital Director and then Chairman of the Department until 1975. He is a graduate analyst of New York Psychoanalytic Institute and also trained in a Doctor of Medical Science Program as a research fellow.
